about

"I Don't Want to Be Your Friend" is one of the ones that hadn't been demoed before we went into the studio. There was the big '80s rock-and-model connection going on, way and I had the Hot Model Girlfriend, who at one point gave me the Friend Speech. So I told Scott Kempner what happened and pretty much just ordered this song. I gave him the title, told him I wanted it to be a blues song, and he did the rest. There was no demo of it, I just showed it to the band in the studio, and we worked it up on the spot; Me and Rongo came up with a sort of pre-drum-machine ZZ Top kind of lick.

The power-of-music postscript to "I Don't Want to Be Your Friend" is that after the album came out, the Del-Lords did the song at the Bottom Line as part of a WNEW live radio broadcast, and we used to do a long intro where I'd tell the story about this girl walking me down the street and giving me the Friend Speech, and the girl who originally gave me the Friend Speech heard it on the radio, and we ended up re-hooking up for a period afterwards.
