Forever Came Today

about

"Forever Came Today" was a song that Scott Kempner and I wrote in Austin, Texas while the Del-Lords were on the road. I had just bought one of those '80s Takamine acoustic guitars, which was one of the first cheap acoustic guitars that you could plug into a P.A. and have it sound good. I got that guitar and a capo and started playing that lick, and Scott was like "Hey, can I finish that song?" The Del-Lords had demoed it, but when it didn't make it to our next record, it had to be on mine. The words came from Scott but I felt really close to them, as I did with a lot of Scott's lyrics. In the Del-Lords, we were really living our lives together; Scott and I were roommates on the road, and all four of us were living through a lot of things as a team. It's a cool song and I still play it; I've changed it around and done it a few different ways. It was great to have Straw involved on it, and have the boy/girl vocal thing going on. Years later, when I produced a band called the Backsliders, I didn't know that they'd been playing "Forever Came Today" for awhile, and we ended up recording it for their Southern Lines CD.
