Vampire Blues

about

The Neil Young song "Vampire Blues" was recorded one night when it was pretty late and we'd already cut a lot of songs, and those guys thought they were done. We were already in full party mode, everybody was blasted and I'm like, 'No, no, we've got to do one more song, get out there.' You can hear on the record that I'm pretty drunk when I start it out. So we got one take of the thing, and at the end of the song, what you hear is the reel of tape spinning off the machine—"OK, we're out of tape, we're done."

"Vampire Blues" is probably the loosest thing on the record, but it's also pretty personal. Neil has always been a big guy for me; when I released "Sorority Girl," my first-ever 45 with my band the Dirty Dogs, I was working at a record store in Laramie, Wyoming, and the first time I played it in the store a guy asked if it was the new Neil Young. Also, I kinda felt like a vampire putting out a solo record. I wouldn't have gotten the deal if I hadn't been in the Del-Lords.
